Facade membranes & under-roof membranes

The most important decision

Closed or open façade – which membrane is right?

The most common mistake when selecting: a membrane for closed façades is used behind open-joint cladding. For joint widths above 10 mm the membrane must be UV-stabilised and approved for visible open mounting.

Important: For open-joint and trapezoidal cladding, always choose a UV-stabilised membrane – Targo VENT WI or Solitex Fronta Quattro. Standard façade membranes without UV protection degrade under prolonged light exposure and lose their protective function.

What membranes must do

Three properties every good façade and sub-roof membrane needs

1

Windtight

Prevents wind from flowing through the insulation and reducing its effectiveness. Particularly important in timber-frame and timber-stud construction.

2

Driving-rain resistant

Protects insulation and structure against water ingress – waterproof from outside, vapour-open from inside for controlled drying.

3

Vapour-open

Water vapour must be able to escape outward. Membranes that are too vapour-tight lead to condensation in the construction – causing mould and structural damage.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about façade and sub-roof membranes

What is the difference between a façade membrane and a sub-roof membrane?

Façade membranes are installed behind the façade cladding (ventilated façade) and protect the insulation layer from driving rain and wind. Sub-roof membranes are laid beneath the roof covering and protect the roof construction from moisture penetrating from above. Both are vapour-open but designed for different constructions.

Which façade membrane is suitable for open-joint or trapezoidal cladding?

For open-joint and trapezoidal cladding with visible joints, the façade membrane must be UV-stabilised and approved for visibly open mounting. Targo VENT WI is suitable up to 30 mm joint width; Solitex Fronta Quattro up to 35 mm – also for trapezoidal cladding.

Can I use a standard façade membrane behind open-joint cladding?

No. Standard façade membranes (such as Solitex Fronta WA) are only suitable for closed façades without visible joints. Under prolonged UV exposure, the material degrades and loses its protective function. Always use a UV-stabilised membrane for open-joint cladding.

What is a weather protection membrane?

Weather protection membranes are temporary protective covers for the construction phase – they protect the shell, insulation and structure temporarily from weather. They are not a substitute for permanent façade or sub-roof membranes.

Do I need adhesive tape for façade and sub-roof membranes?

Yes. Overlaps and connections must be sealed with suitable adhesive tapes or nail sealing tapes. We stock matching accessories in the bonding subcategory – coordinated with Targo and pro clima membranes.

What does vapour-open mean for façade membranes?

Vapour-open membranes allow water vapour to escape from inside to outside while being waterproof from outside. This is crucial to prevent moisture from becoming trapped in the construction – which can lead to condensation, mould and structural damage.
