Sealants & Waterproofing

The right product for every waterproofing task

Sealants & waterproofing – from emergency repairs to structural waterproofing

Whether a crack in the roof needs sealing quickly, a joint needs permanent sealing or a basement wall needs protection against water pressure – there is the right product for every task. The range extends from immediately applicable repair sealants through elastic silicone alternatives to professional thick coatings for structural waterproofing.

Which product for which task?

ProductApplicationKey feature
Aqua Dicht Repair, emergency sealing, cracks, connections Bonds even on damp and wet substrates
Silicone alternative Joints at windows, doors, façades, sanitary Paintable, plaster-compatible, no silicone
Liquid waterproofing Roof, balcony, terrace – area waterproofing Seamless, crack-bridging, brushable
Primers Substrate preparation before sealants Improves adhesion on absorbent surfaces
Thick coating Basement, foundation, earth-contact components Structural waterproofing against water pressure
Decision guide: Emergency sealing in rain → Aqua Dicht (bonds when wet). Joints → silicone alternative. Roof and balcony surfaces → liquid waterproofing. Basements and foundations → thick coating. Always check first: is the substrate absorbent? If so, apply primer first.

The most common waterproofing tasks

Repair, area or structural – three different tasks

1

Quick repair and emergency sealing

When water is penetrating and immediate action is needed: Aqua Dicht repair sealant bonds even to wet and damp surfaces. No waiting for drying, no primer needed – apply and done. For cracks, crack networks, leaking seams and connections on roofs and walls.

2

Permanent area waterproofing

For roof surfaces, balconies and terraces that need permanent waterproofing: liquid waterproofing forms a seamless, elastic layer without overlaps. Reinforce with fibreglass fleece at corners and connections. Multiple coats for full waterproofing performance.

3

Structural waterproofing for basements

Against pressurised and non-pressurised water on basement walls, foundations and earth-contact components: thick coating (KMB) provides permanent protection. Prime the substrate first and form cove fillets before coating.

Silicone alternative instead of silicone – why?

Paintable and without the typical silicone disadvantages

Silicone cannot be painted over and frequently develops mould in wet rooms. Silicone alternatives (acrylic or hybrid joint sealants) seal joints permanently, are paintable and plaster-compatible after curing and are lower-odour indoors. For façade connections, windows, doors and sanitary areas where silicone is unwanted or unsuitable.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about sealants and waterproofing

What is the difference between a sealant and a waterproofing product?

Sealants (joint sealants, silicone alternatives) are applied to joints, cracks and connections – locally or linearly. Waterproofing products (liquid waterproofing, thick coatings) are applied over areas and seal larger zones such as roof surfaces, balconies or basement walls. Repair sealants like Aqua Dicht sit in between – they can be used both locally and over areas.

Which product bonds even when wet?

Aqua Dicht repair sealant is specifically developed for application on damp and wet substrates. This makes it the ideal emergency sealing product when drying is not possible. Other products such as liquid waterproofing and thick coating require a dry or at most slightly damp substrate.

What is a silicone alternative and when should I use it?

Silicone alternatives are joint sealants on acrylic or hybrid basis, applied like silicone from a cartridge, but paintable and plaster-compatible. They are suitable wherever silicone should not be painted over (façades, interior plaster, timber windows) or where mould on silicone surfaces should be avoided.

When do I need thick coating instead of liquid waterproofing?

Thick coating (KMB) is for structural waterproofing against soil and pressurised water on basement walls and foundations. Liquid waterproofing is for roof surfaces, balconies and terraces exposed to weather but not to earth pressure. Both are seamless and brushable but designed for different load categories.

Do I need to prime before applying sealants?

On absorbent substrates (concrete, masonry, plaster), a suitable primer significantly improves adhesion. On smooth, non-absorbent surfaces (metal, sheet metal), sanding or a special bonding primer is required. Aqua Dicht is an exception – it bonds without primer on most substrates, even when damp.
