The professional product for counter battens

Nail sealing tape DSK – seals nail points from the inside out

Nail sealing tape is a double-sided adhesive, carrier-free bitumen tape – no aluminium or fleece top layer, just pure bitumen compound. This makes it the ideal product for a specific task: sealing nail penetration points. The tape is placed under the counter batten before screws or nails are driven through the underlay membrane. When the fixing passes through the tape, the elastic bitumen compound closes around the nail or screw – the penetration is permanently watertight.

All widths at a glance

DSK 50, 60 or 100 mm – which width for which application?

WidthTypical applicationPrice / 10 mPrice/m
DSK 50 mm ★ Standard counter batten 48/50 mm, nail points pitched roof EUR 7.60 EUR 0.76/m
DSK 60 mm 60 mm counter battens, wider battens EUR 8.90 EUR 0.89/m
DSK 100 mm ★ Wide counter battens, profiles, aluminium and plastic connections EUR 14.90 EUR 1.49/m
Rule of thumb: The tape width should match the counter batten size or be slightly wider. For 50 mm battens choose the 50 mm tape; for 60 mm battens choose the 60 mm tape. The 100 mm tape is used for wider battens, double coverage or bonding profiles.

Installation under the counter batten

How nail sealing tape is installed

1

Lay the underlay membrane

The underlay membrane is laid as normal. The fixing points for the counter battens are left open at this stage – nothing is fastened yet.

2

Apply nail sealing tape

Peel the lower protective film from the DSK nail sealing tape and bond it to the underlay membrane – exactly where the counter batten will lie. Leave the upper protective film on for now.

3

Place counter batten and fix

Peel the upper protective film, place the counter batten and press down – it bonds immediately. Then drive screws or nails: they pass through the batten, the bitumen tape and the underlay membrane. The bitumen compound closes elastically around each fixing point, sealing permanently.

Why seal nail points?

Every nail is a potential leak point – DSK closes them permanently

An underlay membrane without nail sealing tape has a tiny opening at every fixing point. In extreme driving rain or wind, moisture can penetrate over the years – initially invisible, then causing damage to insulation and structure. Nail sealing tape is inexpensive, quick to install and closes these weak points. The same principle applies to flat roof screws and mechanical fixings on bitumen membranes.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about nail sealing tape and double-sided bitumen tapes

What is the difference between nail sealing tape and bitumen aluminium tape?

Bitumen aluminium tape bonds on one side and has an aluminium top layer – it is stuck onto surfaces to seal from above. Nail sealing tape DSK bonds on both sides and has no carrier – it is placed between two surfaces (underlay membrane and counter batten) and closes elastically around nails and screws.

When is nail sealing tape used?

Primarily in pitched roofs under counter battens: the tape seals points where screws or nails pass through the underlay membrane. Also used for bonding aluminium and plastic profiles outdoors and any application requiring double-sided adhesion and sealing.

What does "carrier-free" mean?

Carrier-free means the tape consists only of bitumen compound – no aluminium carrier, no fleece, no plastic film. The bitumen compound has a protective film on both sides. This allows the compound to close around a nail or screw as it penetrates – a tape with a rigid carrier could not do this.

Which width do I need for my counter battens?

The tape width should match the counter batten size or be slightly wider. For 48/50 mm battens use the 50 mm DSK; for 60 mm battens use the 60 mm DSK. The 100 mm tape is suitable for wider battens or when generous coverage is required.

Can DSK nail sealing tape also be used for flat roof fixings?

Yes. For mechanically fixed flat roof constructions, sealing washers or nail sealing tape are placed under screw heads. DSK nail sealing tape acts as a seal that closes around the screw and prevents water ingress.
